Torpoint BJJ is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club built for the local community — welcoming beginners, families and experienced practitioners alike.

Founded by a Royal Navy Physical Training Instructor and an Royal Marine Veteran, our coaching combines professional experience with a passion for developing people through structured, high-quality training.

We focus on strong fundamentals, safe progression and creating a positive, ego-free environment where everyone can improve — whether your goal is fitness, self-defence or competition.

Head Coach | Black Belt | Royal Marine veteran

Chris is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with over 14 years of experience in the sport.

Chris brings a deep understanding of grappling and martial arts to every session. Early in his journey, he competed in several professional MMA fights, building a strong foundation in both striking and ground work.

Alongside his martial arts career, he served 13 years in the Royal Marines, developing the discipline, resilience, and leadership that now shape his coaching style. Passionate about BJJ,

Chris is now dedicated to helping other grow, improve, and most importantly, enjoy the sport he loves.

Coach | Brown Belt | Royal Navy PTI

Mathew is a Royal Navy Physical Training Instructor with nearly a decade of experience in strength and conditioning and athlete development.

As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, he has spent years both training and coaching, with a strong focus on fundamentals, structured progression and long-term development. Alongside his coaching, Mathew has played a key role in growing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu within the Royal Navy, helping to develop participation from grassroots level through to competitive pathways.

His coaching style is built around creating a safe, professional and supportive environment where beginners and experienced practitioners alike can progress with confidence.

Outside of coaching, Mathew is usually with his wife - Hayley, running around after his 3-year-old and looking after his new baby — when he’s not back on the mats.

Kids & fundamentals coach | purple belt | royal navy medic

Kris began his BJJ journey in February 2023 and quickly climbed the ranks - earning his blue belt in 2024 and his purple belt in December 2025. Now a proud purple belt under Jamie Horsman (Centaur BJJ - Saltash), his progress reflects his dedication to the art.

He has trained across the UK and US, competed at all levels, and including purple belt super fights. A Navy champion gold medalist, Kris has represented the Royal Navy at Tri-Service level and has podiumed in every competition he has entered.

Kris is also the assistant coach alongside Mat at HMS RALEIGH.

Off the mats, Kris has served 15 years in the Royal Navy and is a proud father of three. He brings that same level of commitment and discipline into his coaching.
